How we test, and where we earn
Advice about hosting is worth exactly as much as your ability to check the incentives behind it. So here are ours, in full.
Who writes this
Content Website Platform (cwp.sg) gives you free hosting on your own subdomain, and writes the guides for using it. The people writing these pages are the same people running the hosting and answering the support threads.
That's the reason this site exists. Most hosting guides are written by someone who has never run a shared server, has never watched a resource limit bite under load, and is paraphrasing another company's documentation. We're writing from the operations side.
How we test
- Every procedure is executed before it ships. If a guide says to run a command or click a setting, someone did it on a live account and confirmed the result.
- Every page carries a verification date. Hosting changes. A page last verified two years ago is telling you about a different product than the one you're using, and you deserve to know that.
- Comparisons require original testing. We don't publish a comparison of two products unless we have measured both ourselves. This rules out a lot of pages we could otherwise rank for, and we consider that the correct trade.
- We publish our methodology and our raw numbers for any benchmark, so you can disagree with it on the evidence.
How we make money
We operate a free hosting tier and a paid one. We make money when someone outgrows the free tier and upgrades — not when you click a link.
That shapes the incentives in a specific and, we think, healthy direction: we have no reason to talk you into a bigger plan than you need, because an upgrade you regret becomes a refund and a support ticket. It also means we would rather tell you to enable caching, which is free, than sell you capacity you don't need.
Where our own hosting genuinely can't do the job — VPS hosting, managed WordPress, transactional email, anything needing SSH or a non-PHP runtime — we recommend other providers. Some of those recommendations earn us a commission. Three rules govern those:
- We only recommend a product we've used.
- A commission never changes a ranking or a verdict. If the better product pays nothing, the better product still wins.
- Any page containing a commissioned link says so, on the page.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell us on the community forum and we'll fix it and note the change. Technical accuracy is the only thing this site has going for it.
